Low-cost solar-powered water purifier developed by students of University of Washington

Using solar energy to purify water isn't new. But it's quite costly. And the good news is now that some students from University of Washington have managed to develop a low-cost solar-powered water purifier. And their water purifier can retail at just $3.40 which is definitely a handy gear that will help many parts of this world suffering from shortage of clean drinking water.

Basically the students' water purifier simply uses parts from a keychain that blinks in response to light, they have created a device that monitors how light is passing through a water-filled bottle and how many particulates are obstructing the light. When enough particulates are removed, the sensor alerts that the water is now safe to drink. Amazingly, their design has also won them a $40,000 prize.
